FAA Selects Layer 7 Technologies for its SecureSpan XML Networking Gateway™

Web Hosting ToolsWASHINGTON, DC – Layer 7 Technologies, the leader in SOA security and governance, today announced several new deals with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). These awards represent a continuation of Layer 7’s growth in working with the FAA and government agencies around the world.

Layer 7, selected as a Qualified Vendor on the FAA’s procurements list, has today been awarded the first gateway technology purchase for use in the FAA’s System Wide Information Management (SWIM) Program. Layer 7’s SecureSpan XML Networking Gateway™ will secure application services designed for the National Airspace System’s traffic management program.

Additionally, the FAA’s Surveillance and Broadcasting Service (SBS) Program Office has selected Layer 7 to secure and govern its critical Web Service operations. The SBS program is an integral part of the effort to transform the nation’s air traffic control system from radar-based to a system that uses precise location-based data from the global satellite positioning network.

A third deal also completed this week is from the Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The FHWA has purchased Layer 7’s SecureSpan™ Virtual Appliance for secure Cross Agency Information Sharing with the FAA and other government agencies.

These gateway deployments from Layer 7 are important components of the FAA’s Next- Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen). The new system, which is designed to improve situational awareness for pilots, brings more data, systems, customers and service providers into the process. Layer 7 SecureSpan Gateways provide the ability to validate transactions, enforce authentication and authorization policies and monitor services in real-time.

“These latest projects are further evidence of the value that Layer 7 offers in relation to securing critical services,” said Paul Rochester, Layer 7 CEO. “The National Airspace System is moving toward a distributed processing environment that will focus on sharing a variety of vital information, including aeronautical information, flight data, traffic flow management data, surveillance and weather information. Layer 7 SecureSpan Gateways provide the security and performance the Department of Transportation and the FAA demand for their Next-Generation Transportation Systems. We look forward to our continued work with the FAA and U.S. Federal Government on these and future projects.”

According to the FAA, as documented in their gateway technology requirements for the SWIM program, “Security is a major issue…The FAA must protect against these threats. An XML gateway server may act as a security proxy for the Application Servers and Services Containers by performing the security-related functionality in their place. If Application Servers and Services Containers delegate security to an XML gateway, they should ensure all Web Services transactions go through the XML gateway.”
