Onyx Acquires New Data Center in South Yorkshire

May 19, 2011 by

Webmaster Toolbox – Onyx Group acquired a new data center, strengthening its position in the UK data center market. Based in South Yorkshire between Leeds and Sheffield, the strategic acquisition is an important milestone for Onyx, establishing us as a leading data center business in the enterprise space. The 22,000 square foot data center gives the Group a large presence in key regions across the UK – Scotland, North East, Yorkshire – and highlights the geographical expansion of the company.

“Our latest acquisition is a key step in the Group’s national footprint”, said Neil Stephenson, CEO, Onyx Group. “It takes us into a new geography, and expands our data center capabilities across the UK. Owning five data centers provides us with a unique advantage over competitors and it enhances our ability in meeting the data needs of larger enterprise businesses. It’s great to acquire a second facility in Yorkshire, following the opening of the North Yorkshire data center in March.”

The acquisition is a coup for Onyx as the South Yorkshire region is fast becoming one of the UK’s leading hubs for digital business and innovation. As part of The Digital Region project, South Yorkshire is the first major region to deploy superfast broadband in the UK, not only bringing improved access to a range of entertainment, business and public sector services, but importantly attracting new investment and new jobs into the region.

Onyx is one of several companies who has realised the potential of The Digital Region, which covers the cities, towns and villages of Sheffield, Doncaster, Barnsley and Rotherham. The project has attracted over £90m of funding from the European Union, partners and the private sector. It is the first of its type in the UK, and puts the South Yorkshire region right at the center of Digital Britain.

“Expanding into South Yorkshire has been an important goal for Onyx as it is home to a number of high profile, global companies with an experienced and skilled workforce,” continued Stephenson. “The region is at the forefront of the Digital Britain agenda and is ideal for start-up high growth companies – it is exactly where we want and need to be.”

David Carr, CEO of Digital Region, echoes the thoughts of Neil Stephenson. “I am delighted that Onyx has decided to acquire a new data center in the region as The Group adds to the very strong digital business and innovation sector here. With the expanding presence of Digital Region’s superfast broadband network across the South Yorkshire region, more and more companies will have superfast access to this new data center and its capabilities. I am delighted to welcome the company into the region and look forward to working with Onyx as they continue to grow”.

The new facility is the first major investment by the company in the South Yorkshire region and reflects the continued growth of the Group, which has seen it develop from a regional North East firm to a national data center business.

The data center adds to those the Group has in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle upon Tyne and North Yorkshire and means the company now provides a unique offering to customers as it provides multi-site resilience for customers data and applications. Each of Onyx’s datacenters also provides space for business continuity services, and there are immediate plans to provide a 250 seat workplace recovery center at the South Yorkshire facility, offering a complete package of disaster recovery options to customers.

As well as its data center infrastructure, business continuity is a key service Onyx provides and has several workplace recovery centers across the UK including Glasgow, Edinburgh and the North East.
