SoftLayer Investing $75 million in New European Operation to Meet Growth Demands

October 25, 2011 by · Comments Off on SoftLayer Investing $75 million in New European Operation to Meet Growth Demands

Web HostingDALLAS/AMSTERDAM — Expanding its global reach and IT hosting capabilities, SoftLayer® Technologies today announced the opening of its new European headquarters and data center in Amsterdam. Over the next two years the company will invest approximately $75 million in its European operations, which also includes new network PoPs in Amsterdam, London, and Frankfurt.

New and existing customers across Europe, especially the large corporate enterprises, Internet savvy small and medium sized businesses (SMBs), social media and gaming start-ups that make up SoftLayer’s core customer base, will be able to leverage these new capabilities, which will officially ‘go live’ at the beginning of November. European customers can now easily order SoftLayer’s unique cloud, dedicated, and managed hosting solutions.

“This launch strengthens our foothold across Europe by bringing our services closer to our existing and expanding customer base,” said Lance Crosby, Chief Executive Officer for SoftLayer. “Proximity to our customers is crucial to driving innovation and improving a better end-user experience. Currently more than 50 percent of our business is done outside North America. Our continued expansion into international markets gives our customers more control and flexibility in the way they manage and build out their cloud infrastructures and services.”

Today, with nearly half of its 23,000 customers coming from more than 140 countries, SoftLayer has an established international customer base and European demand for SoftLayer’s IT hosting services continues to soar across a variety of industries and countries. Companies like Ultra Knowledge, Flumotion, BaseCase and Magma Mobile, which have all adopted SoftLayer solutions and are able to deploy, scale and manage their Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solutions based on SoftLayer’s private network.

“We needed a scalable and reliable hosting provider with global network capabilities, more than just standard IT bells and whistles, to meet our growing demands,” said Etienne Jambou, Chief Marketing Officer for Magma Mobile. “SoftLayer provided us with a complete range of IT infrastructure services from development and production environments to web hosting and database management. Thanks to the robustness of SoftLayer’s infrastructure we have been able to remain focused on our core business.”

With the opening of the Amsterdam data center, SoftLayer will have 13 data centers and 16 PoPs worldwide. Each data center is functionally independent with distinct and redundant resources, as well as fully integrated with all SoftLayer facilities. The company’s global network fully integrates three distinct and redundant network architectures—public, private, and data center to data center—into the industry’s first Network-Within-a-Network topology for maximum accessibility, security, and control.

“The market opportunity for providing hosting and cloud solutions is still in its infancy,” said Melanie A. Posey, IDC Research Vice President, Hosting & Managed Network Services. “Companies like SoftLayer are taking the lead in establishing a globally accessible network that is helping push the adoption of these computing models to a broader mainstream audience. The addition of the new data center and capabilities will provide a foundation for users to securely run a complete gamut of solutions and services based on SoftLayer’s unique Intellectual Property (IP) and turnkey offerings.” Read more

SoftLayer Adds Local Disk Option for CloudLayer Computing

July 26, 2011 by · Comments Off on SoftLayer Adds Local Disk Option for CloudLayer Computing

Hosting Services

DALLASSoftLayer® Technologies, the innovation leader in Cloud, Dedicated, and Managed hosting, today announced the expansion of its storage options for CloudLayer® Computing Instances (CCI) to include Local Disk Storage. Available as an alternative to SoftLayer’s Storage Area Network (SAN)-based CCIs, the new option brings customers the ability to choose the storage that best meets their individual application and performance needs.

“Every customer is different, and needs different things from cloud,” said Duke Skarda, Chief Technology Officer for SoftLayer. “That’s why we created Build Your Own Cloud, letting customers tailor the CPU power, RAM, and storage capacity of their CCIs to their application requirements. Local Disk Storage takes that even farther, bringing customers even greater control over how their cloud solutions perform.

“Local Disk Storage for CloudLayer Computing is implemented as RAID Level 10, for enterprise-grade reliability and security. 25GB or 100GB Local Disks are available for primary storage, and 100GB or 200 GB Local Disks are available for additional storage. SAN-based storage continues to be available; currently the two storage options cannot be used together.

“There are inherent differences between SAN and Local Storage that give each their own advantages,” said Mr. Skarda. “Since SAN-based CCIs store their data in a shared location, they will always provide faster recovery options and greater flexibility in scaling total storage capacity. But, naturally, Local Disk-based CCIs can provide faster input/output speeds, making them an even better option for storage-intensive applications and lowering total cost of operations. Now, it’s entirely up to you which benefits you’d rather leverage.”

Data That Lives Forever in the Cloud: Organic Storage Keeps Data Alive Indefinitely

June 21, 2011 by · Comments Off on Data That Lives Forever in the Cloud: Organic Storage Keeps Data Alive Indefinitely

Webmaster ToolboxSan Francisco, CA – As GigaOM Pro, The 451 Group and North Bridge Venture Partners prepare to announce the results of their inaugural Future of Cloud Computing survey, the CEO of Scality stated that the future of disruptive technologies and the value chain could not be predicted by asking current decision makers.

Lecat said, “A survey highlights some fascinating trends, but it can only tell you what today’s leaders are thinking today. As Albert Einstein said, ‘We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.’ You can’t predict the future of disruptive technologies with today’s thinking. For example, when CIOs in the mid-nineties were asked if they would dismantle their private networks to replace them with encryption over the public internet, they responded that it was not secure enough. Time has passed, and this is now the standard architecture. What a majority of people think about the future today may not actually be the future tomorrow.” Read more

June 8, 2011 by · Comments Off on SoftLayer Launches Public Cloud Computing Image Sharing

Webmaster ToolboxDALLAS SoftLayer® Technologies, the innovation leader in Cloud, Dedicated, and Managed Hosting, today announced the launch of a public image repository for CloudLayer® Computing. Since its inception, CloudLayer Computing has allowed customers to save private image templates, enabling the deployment of additional similar instances without having to install and configure the same operating system and applications multiple times. “One of cloud computing’s greatest advantages is exceptional deployment speed. We wanted to simplify and accelerate the deployment process even more,” said Matt Chilek, Vice President of Systems Development for SoftLayer. “The public repository does just that, letting customers deploy community or commercial instances without having to start from scratch. But, even better, it provides a vehicle for customers who create special-purpose servers or appliances—like for VOIP, Load-Balancing, or Application Hosting functions—to widely distribute their models.”

Publishing or using an image template with the public repository is a simple, automated process through SoftLayer’s industry-leading Customer Portal. Images can be searched for by criteria including publisher or template name, and then ordered on an hourly or monthly billing basis. Read more
