Open Networking Foundation Formed to Speed Network Innovation

March 28, 2011 by · Comments Off on Open Networking Foundation Formed to Speed Network Innovation

Web Hosting BlogOREGON — Six companies that own and operate some of the largest networks in the world — Deutsche Telekom, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Verizon, and Yahoo! — announced today the formation of the Open Networking Foundation (ONF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting a new approach to networking called Software-Defined Networking (SDN). Joining these six founding companies in creating ONF are 17 member companies, including major equipment vendors, networking and virtualization software suppliers, and chip technology providers.

In the past two decades, enormous innovation has taken place on top of the Internet architecture. Email, e-commerce, search, social networks, cloud computing, and the web as we know it are all good examples. While networking technologies have also evolved in this time, the ONF believes that more rapid innovation is needed. SDN fulfills this need by enabling innovation in all kinds of networks — including data centers, wide area telecommunication networks, wireless networks, enterprises and in homes — through relatively simple software changes. SDN thus gives owners and operators of networks better control over their networks, allowing them to optimize network behavior to best serve their and their customers’ needs. For instance, in data centers SDN can be used to reduce energy usage by allowing some routers to be powered down during off-peak periods. Read more

February 23, 2011 by · Comments Off on Parallels announces enablement of new Cloud Infrastructure, Hosted PBX and APS-based services as SMB cloud consumption to increase sharply

Hosting BlogORLANDO, FL. – Hosting and Cloud service enablement leader Parallels today announced it is positioning itself for the growth in small and medium business cloud consumption with the introduction of new strategic Cloud Infrastructure and Hosted PBX solutions, as well as support for  Microsoft Office 365 Syndication and Hyper-V Cloud. It is also increasing its investment in facilitating APS-enabled solutions to accelerate ISVs’ ability to also profit from the cloud.

According to ‘Parallels SMB Cloud Insights’ (U.S. 2010), small and medium business (SMB) cloud consumption has hit the mass adoption curve with the cloud services market valued at $10.6 billion in 2010.  This market opportunity will increase to $28.6 billion and small businesses with fewer than 100 employees are the foundation of this market. They account for over 80% of the total market spending and over 95% of all U.S. SMBs.

“SMBs cloud consumption has hit the wide adoption curve and driving a sea change in the cloud industry,” said Birger Steen, CEO of Parallels. “They are demanding a trusted, full service provider to deliver the integrated and complete portfolio of IT services they need.
