Neustar Implements DNS Security Extensions in the .US Registry

December 22, 2009 by · Comments Off on Neustar Implements DNS Security Extensions in the .US Registry

Web Hosting ServicesSTERLING, VA – Neustar, Inc. (NYSE: NSR) announced today that it has implemented Domain Name Security Extensions (DNSSEC) in the .US country-code top level domain registry.

The technology uses public key cryptography and digital signatures to protect the Domain Name System (DNS) from attacks that hijack and redirect domain name requests. One such attack, called “cache poisoning,” inserts a fake address record for an Internet domain. If the fake record is accepted, the cache is “poisoned” and subsequent requests for the legitimate domain will be redirected to the fraudulent site.

Neustar Launches Initiative to Enhance Domain Name System with Faster, More Secure Updates

December 14, 2009 by · Comments Off on Neustar Launches Initiative to Enhance Domain Name System with Faster, More Secure Updates

Web Hosting ServicesSTERLING, VA – Neustar, Inc. (NYSE: NSR) and OpenDNS today announced the implementation of a Neustar-sponsored initiative that will provide near-real time updating of the Domain Name System (DNS) across the Internet, utilizing Neustar databases to form the DNS Real-time Directory. This provides a centralized cloud-based system that allows Neustar customers and participating providers to publish DNS modifications in real time to participating ISPs and recursive service providers, creating a better experience for Internet users around the world.

Neustar, a provider of managed authoritative DNS services (through its UltraDNS service line), and OpenDNS, a leading recursive DNS service provider, identified the need for a better process for updating the DNS, which is critical to the performance and security of the Internet. Under the current process, enterprises and domain owners, who maintain the authoritative DNS records, are constrained by a ‘waiting period’ known as DNS Time to Live (TTL) before the recursive DNS records cached within the ISPs’ infrastructures are updated. The often sluggish pace of these DNS updates plagues customers of both companies on a daily basis.

The city’s relatively centralized location on the continent helps to mitigate the effects of latency for customers throughout Europe, and AMS-IX has more connected members than any other Internet exchange worldwide. Given the strategic nature of the new UltraDNS node, NeuStar also anticipates enhanced performance for customers in the Asia-Pacific region.
