NGD Europe Data Center Begins $20 Million Expansion To Meet Growing Customer Demand

June 28, 2011 by

Hosting ServicesLONDON – Next Generation Data Limited today announced a $20 million plan to build seven additional data halls at NGD Europe, the data center it opened near Cardiff, Wales last year.

Due for completion by the end of 2011, the expansion project is being funded by shareholders and follows new tenancy agreements worth over $33 million signed this year with several blue chip multinational organisations. This includes the company’s first contract with a Fortune 100 technology corporation headquartered in the United States.

Next Generation Data’s expansion strategy will ensure it continues to maximise the opportunity for providing secure space, power and cooling infrastructure to a growing list of corporate customers. Recently the company secured more than $8 million of debt finance from investors including Lombard and Finance Wales.

“Our initial custom built halls are now fully occupied on long-term contracts and we have a very strong customer pipeline, both in terms of new customers and repeat business from our existing client base,” said Simon Taylor, chairman, Next Generation Data Limited. “The main driver for building the additional data hall capacity this year is to meet demand from large organisations based in Europe and, increasingly, North America where our targeted US sales strategy is clearly starting to pay off handsomely. We are able to offer clients the highly secure world-class facilities they require, located well away from the space, power and security issues associated with the London area.”

The Next Generation Data facility comprises three phases of 140,000 sq ft (raised floor), with a total capacity of 420,000 sq ft. The five principal contracts signed thus far account for approximately one third of the first phase, with a further third currently in discussion [or under Non Disclosure Agreements] with potential occupiers. The data center has the benefit of 90 MVA of contracted power available to site: additional power is available. With the power and shell in place, and much of the infrastructure already operational, data halls can be constructed in as little as 22 weeks from signing of contracts.

“Next Generation Data’s growing success demonstrates there is significant pent up demand for data centers outside of the traditional locations in London and the South East,” said Mark Larard, director of the Data Center Advisory Group for global real estate advisors, Jones Lang LaSalle. “The company continues to challenge industry expectations and offers a serious alternative for organisations searching for an excellent deal on security, power and cost-effective space.”

Tom Freeman, head of Jones Lang LaSalle’s Dallas-based Global Mission Critical Solutions practice, added, “There are very few data center sites truly capable of providing global data hubs. What Next Generation Data is creating in South Wales is one of the only developments of its type outside of the United States that meets the suitability standards required by US corporates. We are finding that our global clients are looking to extend their networks outside of North America and I suspect that the level of power, bandwidth, security and speed-to-market which NGD Europe can provide will make this site an extremely exciting prospect.”

Opened in early 2010 with BT as one of its first anchor tenants, the NGD Europe development is the largest data center in Europe, offering managed hosting and cloud computing providers exceptionally price competitive accommodation in a state-of-the-art secure tier 3+ environment. It features an on–site sub-station providing a high capacity resilient power supply – the first in Europe to be sourced from 100 per cent renewable energy – and multiple high speed low latency fiber connections. The huge carrier-neutral data center is also an ideal co-location facility for large organisations looking to consolidate smaller data centers under one roof; house containerised computing environments; or operate robust second-site back-up and disaster recovery facilities.

About NGD Europe
NGD Europe is able to support High Density Environments for such power-hungry and intensive applications as Cloud Computing, Super Computing and Grid Computing; and is ideally suited to large organisations wishing to consolidate their existing space- or power-restricted data center operations.

NGD Europe is a purpose-built carrier-neutral Tier 3 facility offering 750,000 sq feet (gross internal area in brackets) of highly secure and cost-effective space housing up to 19,000 racks that can be arranged into self-contained data halls of various sizes all with independent services, resilient power and cooling systems. NGD Europe’s environmentally-friendly high level technology infrastructure has been designed to meet and exceed the ever increasing demand for more computing power. Among its many features are a high capacity 180 MVA power supply direct from the super grid and sourced from 100 per cent renewable energy; and a variety of on-site high-speed, low latency carrier interconnects.
