Peak 10 Advises Businesses to Prepare Disaster Recovery Plans for Hurricane Season

July 27, 2011 by

Hosting ServicesCHARLOTTE, N.C. – Peak 10 Inc., a managed services and cloud provider with world-class data centers, is encouraging businesses to ensure that their disaster recovery plans and business continuity programs are in place for the 2011 Atlantic hurricane season. The annual hurricane season, predicted to demonstrate “above normal” activity levels this year, serves as a timely reminder that natural disasters occur regularly and can cause serious damage to a company’s business.

Peak 10 is urging its clients and other businesses to review their current BC/DR plans, as natural disasters, technical malfunctions, cyber attacks and simple human errors can eradicate a company’s essential data. A thorough DR plan can minimize downtime and the impact it has on employees, partners, customers and a company’s bottom line.

A DR plan is especially crucial in light of the above-normal outlook for the 2011 Atlantic hurricane season, which began June 1 and runs through November 30. Currently, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is predicting 12 to 18 named storms, six to 10 total hurricanes and three to six major hurricanes.

“We are constantly asked to assist our customers with their BC/DR needs.  We are able to customize solutions that can include our hardened data centers, our virtual DR and cloud solutions, or both,” said Stefan Pittinger, the vice president and general manager of Peak 10 South Florida. “With three locations in Florida alone, we are well-versed in helping businesses fortify their IT infrastructures and plan for the unexpected. All 20 of our data center facilities are interconnected by a high performance, fully-redundant private network that allows customers to back up their data real-time in multiple geographic locations, greatly reducing the chance for lost data or downtime in the event of a natural disaster.”

For the last decade, Peak 10 has helped companies assess the strength of their DR plans and identify potential areas for improvement. One tool it has used to do this is its widely popular DR Checklist, which poses thoughtful questions to help companies determine weaknesses in their plans. Peak 10 has also recently released two white papers related to disaster recovery and business continuity. The first, entitled “Disaster Recovery: Planning from Scratch,” explains how to identify your most mission-critical data, assign recovery point objectives and consider budget allocations. The second, entitled “Disaster Recovery Drill,” addresses how to recover from a disaster, as well as data center options for business continuity. A special Hurricane Preparedness webinar presentation by David Kidd, Peak 10’s director of quality assurance and compliance, is also available for download.
